Opened in 1966 as a dirt track, Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina paved its way to becoming one of the region's most competitive tracks when they put the pavement surface down in 1972. The .455 oval has been operated by the Hackett family for decades and is set to be the final one for the Hacketts as they have announced the sale of the Speedway.
Caraway has been a mainstay in the Southern Modified scene and with the SMART Modified Tour.

The 2026 Robert Jeffreys Memorial will be the 81st SMART Modified Tour race at Caraway.

Robert Jeffreys won the first ever SMART Modified Tour race at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia on Saturday April 9, 1989. Jefffreys was one of the original SMART Mod Tour competitors and a respected member of the Modified community. He was known for being a fair and respectful racer. Robert won on the SMART Tour three-times. Besides Langley, his other wins came at Summerville Speedway (SC) in 1993 and one of his most noted at North Wilkesboro Speedway (NC) in 1990.
Jeffreys has 33-victories on his record at Bowman Gray Stadium, NASCAR's first weekly racing series track. His son Lee is a 30-time winner at the Stadium and carries his father's famous paint scheme on his racecar.
