In late 1988, a group of loyal Modified owners and drivers decided to bring back the raw horsepower and the wide five wheels that once dominated the tracks of the southeast. A rained-out Modified race at Myrtle Beach Speedway proved to be a rebirth of the once legendary division. Standing in the chilly rain, that group decided to form a touring series that would soon give a new direction to the Modifieds.
Since that day, the Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) has hurdled many obstacles while trying to rebuild the Modified division in the southeast that once reigned supreme. The dedication of the drivers, owners, crew members, and Tour officials has surpassed many goals and aspirations that was set previously. The rebirth of the SMART Modified Tour has proven to be inspirational for drivers and fans. No matter where the Tour travels, from the sandy shores of North and South Carolina to the mountains of Virginia and everywhere in between, the SMART Tour features some of the best Modified drivers and racing in the region.
A SMART Modified is a light-weight high-horsepower open-wheeled rocketship of a racecar. Modified people typically use the term "these are the drivers that live by the grace of God and 600-horsepower" and when you witness a Modified race in person you instantly understand that these are some of the most exciting racecars in all of Motorsports.
SMART Modified Tour racecar drivers come from all walks of life. We have Daytona 500 winners and NASCAR Hall of Famers to local level racers who hold day jobs in their hometowns all competing on the SMART Modified Tour. From mechanics, mailmen to engineers, our racers are every day Americans that spend their weekends racing 600-horsepower ground-pounding racecars..
