In late 1988, a group of loyal Modified owners and drivers decided to bring back the raw horsepower and the wide five wheels that once dominated the tracks of the southeast. A rained-out Modified race at Myrtle Beach Speedway proved to be a rebirth of the once legendary division. Standing in the chilly rain, that group decided to form a touring series that would soon give a new direction to the Modifieds.
Since that day, the Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) has hurdled many obstacles while trying to rebuild the Modified division in the southeast that once reigned supreme. The dedication of the drivers, owners, crew members, and Tour officials has surpassed many goals and aspirations that was set previously. The rebirth of the SMART Modified Tour has proven to be inspirational for drivers and fans. No matter where the Tour travels, from the sandy shores of the Carolinas to the green mountains of Virginia and everywhere in between, the SMART Tour features some of the best Modified drivers and racing in the region.
Thanks to our historian Justin Mincey, and TheThirdTurn.com, you can deep dive with us into the statistical history of the SMART Modified Tour.
