The Southern Modified world needed a crown jewel event and they got one with the inaugural running of the Pace-O-Matic King of the Modifieds in 2024 at South Boston Speedway. A big-money race created to bring together the best asphalt Modified talent in America to race at one of the south's great venues of speed, the South Boston Speedway.
The SMART Modified Tour and CEO Chris WIlliams created the race to stimulate growth in Modified racing and its future, while celebrating the great heritage of Modified racing, north and south, with special displays and treats for the Modified racing fan.
The 2025 editiion of the King of the Modifieds promises to elevate the game. A star studded field will descend on South Boston Speedway for a two-day affair. Practice and Qualifying are free to race fans on King's Friday. On Saturday, bring the family to see the car up close and meet the stars at the Pace-O-Matic Pit Party on the track. Then settle into your seats for the Dominion Energy Last Chance Qualifier followed by four great races. South Boston's NASCAR Sentara Late Models compete in Twin 50-lap features with a STAR Super Stock feature race in between. Then the main event, the 2nd Annual King of the Modifieds.

From Richie Evans, to Ray Hendrick and beyond, the King of the Modifieds pays tribute to the enduring legacy of some of Modified Racing's true-kings. We crown a yearly King in victory lane but do it with respect to the greats that raced before us.
Don't be surprised if you see Legendary Modified racers and personalities on the grounds.
In 2024, 16-year old rookie Luke Baldwin drove to the front and took his first career Tour-Type Modified win in the biggest race of the year, the King of the Modifieds. He went on to win the 2024 SMART Modified Tour Championship. Luke's grandfather, the late "Tiger" Tom Baldwin, was a Modified Legend. His father Tommy is a long-time crew chief in the NASCAR Cup Series. His brother Jack is also a Modified racer.
South Boston Speedway has a rich history of Modified and Late Model Racing since opening its gates in 1957.
